Our Rationale

At GPAS, we advance breakthrough science to transform how the world understands and responds to infectious diseases. Our aim is not simply to react, but to empower laboratory teams with the tools and evidence they need to take swift, informed action against emerging threats.

Every missed signal, undetected variant, or delayed response contributes to the acceleration of antimicrobial resistance—and costs lives. That’s why our research focuses on discovery with a direct line to impact.

Today, this means pioneering next-generation digital microbiology laboratories that provide high-confidence insights. By building deep understanding of pathogen behaviour and linking it to clinical data, we help unlock faster, data-driven decision-making across global health systems.

EIT Oxford’s commitment - unprecedented in its scale and ambition

EIT Oxford has a unique opportunity to tackle this challenge and deliver sustainable solutions.

In 2024, the Ellison Institute of Technology Oxford launched its Pathogen Program, with the goal of reducing the millions of lives lost through the inappropriate treatment of infectious diseases and the avoidable escalation from local outbreaks to pandemics. The Global Pathogen Analysis Service is the first output of the Program, an accurate bioinformatic platform that enables accurate and fast analysis of pathogengenomic sequences.

Led by a world-class faculty of scientists, technologists, policy makers, economists and entrepreneurs, the Ellison Institute of Technology aims to develop and deploy commercially sustainable solutions to solve some of humanity’s most enduring challenges. By breaking down the silos between science, research, industry and policy, we are reimagining the path from scientific discovery to applied solutions for the benefit of society.

It's the beginning of a new era, marked by cutting-edge research, innovation, and collaboration.
